Content Management

What is a content managed system (CMS for short)? It is a website that can have it's content changed and updated by the website owner / editor through an interface over the web. This can all be done without the content owner having to worry about the complexities that a designer / developer has to know of creating pages in XHTML, CSS or even PHP (etc.) and then uploading them to a given website via FTP.

The topic of content management is varied and vast; it has almost as many differing solutions to the problem as there are websites utilising content management systems. That is to say that most CMS's - when required - used to be custom built; they often still are. Most of them are inflexible and can take quite a learning curve in order to understand.

Ray Dale's experience of working with a wide variety of CMS's ranges from open-source solutions to multi-million pound implementations at enterprise-level. This means that Ray Dale can fit into designing with an existing content management system, or set up a CMS for you.

If you require a CMS Ray Dale will use the multi-award winning open-source Drupal as a preferred solution. Using an open sources system that is free means that you will only be charged for the setup and implementation of this free system, rather than the usual high price of the CMS purchase on top. This can be surprisingly cost effective. Some of the available open-source CMS's (and particularly Drupal) are every bit as powerful and secure as the expensive proprietary solutions often found in large enterprises. In fact a lot of large companies are turning in particular to Drupal as it is a cheap and endlessly flexible solution if somebody with suitable experience can be found to setup, design, develop and deliver such a system.
